Optional DIY keel installation idea:
Question: How to install optional keel?
Answer: For the FCB290 boat, originally designed as a flat bottom vessel, there exists an optional DIY keel installation method to enhance performance and directional stability. This involves the placement of an elongated semi-rigid structure beneath the deflated air floor.
To execute this modification, two Velcro straps are affixed to the underside of the boat, positioned beneath the air floor. These straps serve to secure a chosen structure, such as a foam swimming noodle or a shaped wooden keel, in place. For the most straightforward implementation, a large diameter foam swimming noodle, readily available at local retail stores like Walmart or Target for approximately $3, can be utilized. When inserted beneath the air floor and secured by the Velcro straps, this foam noodle effectively simulates an inflatable keel, thereby enhancing the boat's performance and stability.
For increased rigidity, it is also feasible to insert PVC tubing within the foam noodle. This dual-layered approach further reinforces the keel structure, ensuring optimal performance on the water. With the Velcro straps firmly holding the noodle in place beneath the air mat, the DIY keel modification offers a practical solution for enhancing the FCB290 boat's maneuverability and control. See YouTube video for example of installation on similar type of boat.
Note: Specifications and accessories are subject to change without notice. Max O/B Motor means: maximum power of outboard motor that can be safely used to plane the boat loaded to the maximum capacity at normal water surface conditions. Please exercise common sense and caution when using maximum motor capacity. Do not jump from wave to wave as new 4-stroke motors are much heavier then 2-stroke and provide extra strain on the transom. Under normal circumstances, with half the maximum persons/load capacity, 50% of maximum O/B power rating may be necessary to put the boat on plane.
